The platform at Manchester Piccadilly was crowded with commuters wrapped in dark coats, students dragging suitcases, and tired parents trying to keep children close. Steam drifted along the rails. Announcements echoed overhead. Everything smelled of metal, coffee, rain, and old stone.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

James barely noticed any of it.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

He had slept less than an hour.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The unknown caller\u2019s voice was still in his head.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Then the line had gone dead.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

James had almost stayed home. At sixty-two, he had learned that strange calls rarely brought anything good. His life had become small on purpose. A rented flat outside Manchester. Tea for one. Groceries on Thursdays. Two children who called when they remembered. An ex-wife who no longer hated him, which somehow hurt more than if she had.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

He expected nothing from the world now.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Then he saw the dog.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

James stopped breathing.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The crowd blurred.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The dog looked directly at him.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

But real.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

James buried his face against the animal\u2019s neck and began to sob in front of strangers.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

That was when he felt something beneath the collar.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

A small metal tag.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
Not the old one.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
This tag was newer, scratched, and tied to the collar with a piece of blue string.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

James turned it over.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

One sentence had been engraved on the back.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

James looked up.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

A woman stood near a pillar, half-hidden by the crowd. She was perhaps forty, with dark hair tucked beneath a wool hat and a navy coat buttoned to her throat. Her face was pale, her eyes red from lack of sleep.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

James knew immediately.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\u201cYou called me.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
She nodded.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\u201cMy name is Ruth Calder.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Baxter lifted his head at her voice.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

His tail moved once, gently.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

James tightened his arms around the dog without meaning to.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

James stood slowly, one hand still gripping Baxter\u2019s collar.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Ruth glanced down the platform.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Not casually.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

That was the first thing that made James afraid.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWe shouldn\u2019t talk here,\u201d she said.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

James\u2019s voice hardened. \u201cYou have ten seconds before I find a police officer.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
